(Letter from Türkiye)
Thinking of the Lotus of Compassion Blooming Amid the Earthquake

By Rabia (Goodworld Charity Bank Volunteer)

Have you ever heard the story of the lotus flower?

Born and raised in the mud, yet never allowing a single drop of it to stain its petals, this flower is like a secret searching for itself in the mirror of the water. It rises from the darkness, and yet carries not a single blemish. It is as if the world has touched it with dirty hands, and it has transformed that touch into grace. Its roots lie in the heart of darkness, but its face is always turned toward the sun.

In the ancient teachings of the East, the lotus symbolizes the purification of the soul. Its journey from mud to radiant whiteness mirrors the inner journey of a human being. For we, too, often take root in darkness — in our fears, our wounds, our mistakes. Yet the moment we turn our faces toward the light, the lotus within us awakens. And then the residue of the past transforms into the hope of the future.

Is this not the struggle every human carries within?

Does the splendor and glitter of the world not make us dizzy?

Do we not become selfish, deceived by its shine?

Are we not swept away by the feeling of “only me”?

Do we not lose ourselves in the dark?

So what is it that leads us back to the sun?

Our conscience…

The voice of our heart…

The courage to become a voice for the silence of others…

Then, heartfelt acts of kindness begin to sprout. A person starts to share — first their thoughts, then their happiness. The tongue that once said “I” gently transforms into “we.” One finds peace in another’s joy. And within a self-centered world, the spirit of volunteerism is born.

If sharing is true, a person multiplies themselves in another; they do not diminish or lose. The more they divide, the more they grow. They become a light in someone else’s darkness.

Those who have lived through the disaster of the century — the earthquake survivors — know this darkness well. They never forget the value of a hand extended toward them. Nor those who stood like lanterns in that night.

I would like to address the Goodworld Foundation and all the volunteers in Buddhist temples whose sole purpose is to share.

I know that Türkiye, where millions were shrouded in darkness after the earthquake disaster, is not the only country to which you have extended your hand. I am certain that in every darkness you reach, you continue to be a light — without discrimination of religion, language, or race.

When I visited South Korea, my eyes were drawn to the lotus flowers in the gardens of your temples. They had not yet bloomed… Yet I knew that when they did, they would be the brightest flowers in the garden. Sometimes the brightest flowers are nourished by the quietest roots. Just like goodness… It grows without noise, without the need for display. And when the time comes, it becomes light in the midst of darkness.

In that moment, I understood that the lotus is not merely a miracle blooming on water; it is a possibility waiting to bloom within the human heart. The lotuses in your gardens may still have been buds, but you had already understood that the light within you was meant to be shared. Along that path, you had nurtured countless new blossoms.

Being a part of this heartfelt bond has made me deeply happy.

When the goal is beautiful and the path leading to it is beautiful, one simply says, “This is it.”

Thank you for being my “this is it.”

I learned from you that it is possible to pass through dirt without becoming stained. Like the lotus, you know that beauty does not feel ashamed of where it grows; instead, it transforms that place. And I believe that what will remain for tomorrow will not be our titles, our possessions, or our temporary splendors. What will remain is the small light we kindle in someone else’s darkness.

For a person multiplies as they share.

They grow as they divide.

And they are completed most of all when they become someone else’s hope.

The lotus whispers this to us:

Darkness may be inevitable.

But light is always a choice.
